Does anyone actually use passbook

If an airline has it, I use it also. Pretty neat, but not a wallet replacement. The latter was a pleasant surprise, so I'd say it has pretty reasonable international support, at least as far as airlines go.

All the movie theaters around here use Passbook. It's ridiculously useful. You go to the line and they just take your phone and put it under a scanner and you're done.

Love it. The theaters around here also have mostly all switched to reserved seating too. So you don't have to get there so early to get a good seat. The movie going experience has really improved with these little improvements. My dentist uses it to remind me of my appointments. I like it. I want to use it for movie tickets, but tickets are more expensive with it, so not a lot of use there. I don't have a lot of gift cards, so no use there.

Was very convenient. I like that it displays on the lock screen so the ticket is just a swipe away. Passbook ties into push notifications, so presumable his dentist pushes a notification some time before his appointment, bringing the dentist's Passbook card to the front and on the lock screen.

Wrink wrote: How does this work? You can actually distribute passes via email or the web. And the pass itself is a pretty straightforward zip package with text config files, the only tricky bit is signing it and Apple provides a utility for that if you are low volume.

And you need a dev account. If you want the pass to live-update like changing the appointment time , then you need to run a service and things get complex.

Passbook does not much, but when it does it's with brio. In Europe: Easyjet. Mostly travel, great at that.

I haven't had a lot of luck with Passbook the few times I've tried it airline, couple loyalty cards, etc. I don't even need to show them my member number, they already have it. It sounds like Starbucks is the one place that really has using Passbook down pat, but I rarely if ever go to Starbucks. Local coffee FTW. I blame the general back-ass-wardsness of the United States when it comes to things like this more so than I blame Apple or its implementation here, but for me at least, it ends up creating more problems than it solves, so I have no real reason to use it.

There are few things hipsters love more than the pure rush of uncut authenticity gained from doing something in a conspicuously old-timey way. But while hipsters have revived the markets for everything from vinyl LPs to mustache clippers, they have yet to bring about a renaissance of what would appear to be the most authentic and idiosyncratic of banking products: the passbook savings account.

Still, the processing of transactions and calculation of interest are handled via computer just as they would be with any other account, Kilmer says. Decades ago, passbook savings were one of the most popular types of bank accounts out there. Not so much. Older people who picked up their savings habits before the advent of electronic banking, and younger people who grew up in countries where passbook banking is still the norm, may feel more comfortable carrying a passbook than having to rely on electronic statements.

And they can be a tool for teaching good saving habits, particularly for kids, Kilmer says. And, says Feddis, passbook savings accounts that require withdrawals in person with the book in hand can be a good way for account holders to keep their hands out of the cookie jar.
