Why does travis decide to take good care of Old Yeller? What are the characters for Old Yeller? Who are the main characters in Old Yeller? We could tell by their rumblings and bawlings that they were gradually working their way down through the brush toward each other and getting madder by the minute.
I always liked to see a fight between bulls or bears or wild boars or almost any wild animals. Now, I got so excited that I jumped up from the table and went to the door and stood listening.
I'd made up my mind that if the bulls met and started a fight, I was going to see it. Every night before Mama let him go to bed, she'd make Arliss empty his pockets of whatever he'd captured during the day.
Generally, it would be a tangled-up mess of grasshoppers and worms and praying bugs and little rusty tree lizards. And once he turned out of his pocket a wadded-up baby copperhead that nearly threw Mama into spasms. That day when I saw [Little Arliss] in the spring, so helpless against the angry she bear, I learned different. I knew then that I loved him as much as I did Mama and Papa, maybe in some ways even a little bit more.
After that, I couldn't do enough for Old Yeller. What if he was a big ugly meat-stealing rascal? I didn't wait to hear any more. I ran off. I was so full of relief that I was about to pop. I knew that if I didn't get out of sight in a hurry, this Burn Sanderson was going to catch me crying.
In a way, it sort of hurt my pride for a little old girl like Lisbeth to come in and take over my jobs. Papa had left me to look after things. But now I was laid up, and here was a girl handling my work about as good as I could. Still, she couldn't get out and mark hogs or kill meat or swing a chopping axe. Now, I knew that Spot wouldn't get well, and this bull wouldn't, either. I knew they were both deathly sick with hydrophobia.
Old Yeller had scented that sickness in this bull and somehow sensed how fearfully dangerous it was. I thought of Lisbeth and Little Arliss down past the spring. I came up out of my chair, calling for Mama. We could wait and see. We could tie him or shut him up in the corncrib or some place till we know for sure! Mama broke down and went to crying then. She put her head on my shoulder and held me so tight that she nearly choked off my breath.
I'll shoot him if you can't, but either way, we've got to do it. We just can't take the chance! I started to holler at them. Sort order. Start your review of Little Arliss Old Yeller, 3.
Mar 05, Mischenko rated it really liked it Shelves: middle-grade-children-s. Roughly six years has passed since the last book and Arliss is now twelve years old.
He offers to try, but everyone just laughs at him which makes him even more angry. He has plans to work on breaking the horse without his parents permission which is extremely dangerous. Arliss hates school and would quit at the drop of a hat if he could. The adults seem way too lenient with him as well. We did enjoy reading this book and it was such a quick read. It was nice to learn that Travis is now married and that all the previous book characters are living well.
Savage Sam was mentioned a few times, but this installment is more about Arliss and the horse. View all 18 comments. Oct 02, Cruse rated it liked it. This book was a disappointment for me. It seemed like the author did a rush job. The parents portrayed in the Old Yeller book would not have put up with the attitude and disrespect Arliss showed adults. The whole horse catching thing was just too easy.
Nothing dealing with an animal is that easy, esp. He would have been savy to those types of tricks. Then I don't get why Arliss kept blacking out unless he head butted the horse in the middle of the wild ride. I think if he had This book was a disappointment for me.
I think if he had taken his time and thought it out, put in more detail, the book could have been awesome. A week of chasing a wild horse - etc. View 2 comments. Aug 09, Zane rated it it was ok.
I've always been rather conflicted about the character of Arliss and throughout the two previous books have never quite been able to make up my mind about him.
On the one hand, he has a lot of characteristics that I admire making up the core of his personality, so on that front I am inclined to like him. However, I do not like most of the things which he does, so I've always settled for saying that I "don't like him much". Well that changed in this book. I still don't stand by all the things he d I've always been rather conflicted about the character of Arliss and throughout the two previous books have never quite been able to make up my mind about him.
Arliss is seen to be a very curious child, asking all sorts of questions. But he also very stubborn as well. When he wants to go on the cattle drive to Kansas with Jim and he says no he puts up a really big fuss. He also doesn't like being bossed around mainly by Travis and even throws rocks at him whenever he gets really mad.
But overall, he is very kinds and very helpful. Arliss is first seen sitting on Jim's horse with Travis asking questions like what Jim is going to sell their steers for. As he prepares to leave Arliss puts up a big fuss because he wants to go with him but he tells him that he needs to stay and take care of his family.
Arliss is seen again later on in the evening, coming home from "bear hunting" and asks who busted down the fence. When Travis says that it was a stray dog, he states that he needs a good hunting one and Katie tells him to go outside and wash up for supper.
The next morning Arliss awakes to find the dog outside. He immediately claims him as his dog and names him Old Yeller.
When he sees Travis angrily grab a stick, he grabs one too and they engage in a stick fight when Katie comes out and breaks it up. Upon seeing how Arliss has already bonded with Old Yeller she allows him to keep him and they begin playing with each other.
Later on when Travis finds them splashing around in the pond they get their water from and tells them to get out, Arliss just sticks out his tongue and refuses to listen to him.
Before long they engage in another fight, as Arliss begins throwing rocks at Travis until Katie breaks it up once more and tells Arliss that he needs to start minding Travis and sends him inside to change into dry clothes. The next day, while Travis and Katie are cutting fence posts Arliss and Old Yeller are by the creek about to catch a catfish.
After successfully doing so, Arliss presents it to Katie and tells her a tall tale about how he had to dive deep underwater to do so. Of course neither she nor Travis believe him, but they humor him anyway.
